Gophers Recruiting Class Ranked Nationally
The Minnesota Golden Gopher '09 recruiting class was ranked #11 nationally by ESPN (Click Here to see article). The Gophers are ranked behind recurring powerhouses North Carolina (#1), Duke (#7) and UCONN (#6) but ahead of hoops notables Marquette (#13), Louisville (#14), and Kansas (#22). It's noted that of four signees, two of them are in the ESPN top 100. Those two, Royce White and Rodney Williams are both from Minnesota and have been highly touted by local and national media. I have seen Royce White play in person and have done a little research including videos on Rodney Williams. Rodney Williams is one of the most athletic players to come to the Gophers in a long while. Rodney came jump out the gym and is one of the quickest leapers I've ever seen. Yet the word is that he has no shot to accompany his athletic ability. He's young and raw so there is room to work. He has highlight reels all over YouTube so check him out. I saw Royce White play in the State Championship game last month and he is a better all around player. In the high school game he often dwarfed his opponents. In this game alone we saw him abuse people on the post, grab almost any rebound he wanted, and hit a couple three pointers to go along with everything else. Between the two top recruits White is far more ready to play than Williams, but ultimately I think Williams has a better future. White's game is a down low post game, yet he is only 6'7" maybe 6'8". He will quickly be undersized as he goes on in his career. With Williams' athletic ability he will have more room to transform into a SF or SG, ultimately giving him more of a future with the team and in basketball in general. That being said, both of these players will be an improvement to a hurting and athletically inferior Gopher squad.
