LOST 013 | Some Like It Hoth

LOST 013 | Some
Like It Hoth - Recap
I was very surprised with last night's episode. After the Sayid episode (episode 5.11, He's Our You) I was not looking forward to learning about Miles' character last night. Yeah it would be intriguing to find out that he was Pierre Chang's son, but we kind of already knew that. Yeah we may learn where he is getting his powers from, but that doesn't really matter. Yet they did it again, they caught me by surprise and pulled in a bunch of little tidbits or answers to questions from episodes past that were answered in this episode. And as always, there were a few new questions and story lines that were opened up. Well...here we go!

Like all character centric episodes we were bouncing back and forth from on and off the island. And like last time I will start off the island since it is always the more boring story line and all we really care about is what happens on the island. So we start off viewing Miles' mom trying to find somewhere for the two of them to live. Little Miles is making a trip to the vending machine when he starts hearing a voice from one of the other rooms in the complex. Being a crafty kid, Miles ends up finding the door key under a statue and gets into the room. Next thing we know Miles is screaming and mom and the landlord come running into the room to find Miles standing over a dead body. Miles keeps spouting off information about the mans dead wife and claims that he is still talking to Miles. Mom and landlord get to be freaked out and the scene cuts.

We then flash forward about 15 years to a much more edgy Miles Strom with skunk streaked hair and facial piercings everywhere. He knocks on the door and tells the woman that he "needs to see her." Miles walks into a room littered with prescription pill bottles and medical machinery. Following the cords from all of the machines we see Miles' mom sleeping on the bed. Miles wakes her and they end up talking about Miles' father (Pierre Chang). Miles' mom tells him that his father is an awful man and that he kicked them out when Miles was just a baby. She tells him that he cannot find his father because Pierre is bad man and is dead. Miles, now fully aware of his ability to talk to the dead still has plans of talking with his father and asks her where his body can be found. A fearful look takes over the face of Miles' mother as she tells him that his father's body is "somewhere you could never go" (ahem, the island).

Flash forward again, Miles has cleaned up his act and looks to be a respectable business man who is harnessing his odd powers in order to make a living. Miles is sitting down on a picnic table with a distraught father who wants Miles to ask his dead son if he knew that his father loved him. After a little coercing and some extra cash Miles does so and tells the father "of course he knew you loved him." While walking to his car Miles is approached by Naomi Dorrit who we have seen before as she came to the island on Charles Widmore's freighter. Naomi takes Miles off to have an audition where he talks to a dead body that he says was returning from purchasing the plane and dead bodies that Charles Widmore used to plant as the fake crash site of Oceanic flight 815.

A few days later we find Miles walking along the street eating his freshly purchased fish taco as a van pulls up next to him and a man calls him by name. Miles is like "WTF mate? How do you know me?" At this point two masked men come flying out the sliding door and pull Miles into the Van. The man in the front seat introduces himself as Bram. He begins to try and convince Miles not to get on the freighter and head to the island. Confused Miles asks why not? The man replies by uttering this question that we heard at the end of last weeks episode. "Do you know what lies in the shadow of the statue?" Sarcastically Miles says, "I don't suppose I do?" Bram goes on to tell Miles to join them and not Widmore by offering answers to how Miles got his power and how to fill that empty void in his heart. Miles alerts them that he is in it for the money and for him not to get on the boat they would have to offer him double what Widmore did, $3.2 million (interesting). Miles then gets thrown out of the van and as they drive off Bram tells miles that he is batting for the wrong team, the team that is going to lose.

On The Island
We return to the island and see Kate and Sawyer fresh off of delivering Ben Linus to the Richard Alpert. Sawyer radios Miles and tells him to delete the security tapes that show them taking Ben into the jungle. Miles pops out the tape but before he can destroy it Horrace bursts into the security office looking for LaFleur. Miles tells him that LaFleur is off the grid looking for the escaped hostile. In desperation Horrace brings Miles into the "circle of trust" and enlists him to run an errand for him. He has to deliver the "package" to Radzinsky at grid 334 and return with Radzinsky's "package." Miles mentions that grid 334 is in the hostiles territory but goes anyways. Once he arrives to grid 334 Radzinsky comes flying out of the jungle with a gun and stops the van. Radzinksy whistles and two construction workers with the Swan logo on their jumpsuits carry out a dead body. Supposedly the guy died on the construction site by falling into a ditch, but he had what looks like a bullet wound in his head. Radzinksy tells him not to worry about it and sends him off on his way but before Miles takes off he crawls to the back to talk to the dead body and find out how he really died.

Miles returns to the security station and Horrace tells Miles to take the body out to Dr. Chang at the Orchid. Miles returns to the van to see Hurley loading sandwiches into the back of the van. Since they are both going to the Orchid they carpool. We then cut to Kate and Juliet catching up on what happened to young Ben when Roger Linus rolls in. Juliet panics and tells Roger that Ben just disappeared. Roger freaks out and storms out of the infirmary. Juliet and Kate realize that their cover has been blown. Back to the carpool we see Hurley writing in his diary as he asks Miles how to spell bounty hunter. They fight over which of them farted and figured that something in the back smelled bad. Miles pulls over and Hurley discovers the dead body and sort of figures out that Miles can talk to dead people. We then find out the this dude died from having his filling and tooth being yanked right out of the socket and straight out through his brain, killing him. They arrive at the Orchid and give the body to Pierre Chang where Hurley finds out that Chang is Miles' father. Chang threatens Hurley by telling him that if he tells anybody about the body he'll send him to Hydra island to weigh polar bear turds for their stupid experiments. LOL, polar bear turds!

Kate tries to console the visibly upset Roger and further blows their cover by showing a vested interest in Ben's survival. Roger, a little drunk by now thinks about reporting his suspicions of Kate to Horrace and the security team but instead runs into Jack who is cleaning a classroom and explains the situation to Jack. Realizing the potential backlash of Roger reporting Kate, Jack tells Roger that he's had a few too many drinks and probably came up with some crazy ideas in his head. Again Roger storms off in disgust. Miles and Hurley begin talking about how Miles knows that Chang is his dad when Pierre roles in and needs a ride to the construction site where Radzinsky is. Again in the middle of nowhere Chang tells Miles to stop and hops out to open a hidden gate that leads to the construction site. Once there Chang hops out and Hurley overhears a few construction workers as they are imprinting a serial number on a door. Hurley recognizes the numbers as the cursed numbers (4 8 15 16 23 42) and figures out that the construction site is actually the hatch (the Swan).

On the drive back Hurley keeps pushing the issue of Miles finding out that Chang is his father and Miles freaks out telling Hurley that he doesn't want anything to do with his dad. To get back at Hurley Miles snatches Hurley's notebook and starts to read it. He finds out that Hurley is in the midst of writing Empire Strikes Back. Hurley tells Miles that since it is 1977 Star Wars just came out and he wants to help George Lucas by sending him the script with a few improvements. This may be one of the most clever and funny parts of the show this season! Sawyer returns from his trip to find Jack in his house with Juliet. Jack came to alert Sawyer of Roger's suspicions of Kate. Sawyer walks outside to recompose himself and Phil approaches him claiming he knows who took the kid. He pulls out the surveillance tape that Miles did not destroy and Sawyer takes Phil inside and knocks him out.

Miles and Hurley return from their trip and Hurley gives Miles in all actuality an amazing piece of advice stemming from Empire Strikes Back and the way the Luke handled finding out the Darth Vader was his father. This analogy really hits Miles hard and we see him looking into the window of Chang's house where he sees Chang playing with baby Miles. This whole father thing seems to have struck a soft spot in Miles when Chang all of the sudden walks outside and asks Miles to help him meet the new scientists who just came in on the sub. Miles and Chang then head down to the dock to meet the new scientists. While unpacking their stuff Miles grabs a suitcase out from the hole in the sub. Following the case out of the hole is one of the scientists who turns out to be Daniel Farraday who nonchalantly says, "Hey Miles. Long time no see." BOOM, the end.
