1981 -- The Mets beat the Yankees in the 16th and final Mayor's Trophy Game, gaining the 8-7-1 all-time series edge.
1978 -- Cincinnati's Pete Rose becomes the 14th player in baseball history to record 3,000 hits.
1955 -- "Damn Yankees" opens in New York City, starting a run of 1,022 performances.
1938 -- Phillies pitcher Harold Kelleher faces 16 Cubs batters in sixth inning, allowing 12 runs.
